Time-of-Use and Free Nights Plans in Texas: When They Actually Save You Money

Texas REPs sell three flavors of time-shifted pricing: standard TOU, free nights, and free weekends. Two of them are mostly traps. Here is the math.

Texas REPs love marketing time-shifted electricity. "Free Nights!" "Free Weekends!" "100 Free Hours!" The branding is loud because the products work for a narrow slice of customers — and lose money for everyone else. The state's deregulated market gives REPs latitude to design rate structures that flat-rate states don't allow, and that latitude shows up as creative pricing that rewards a very specific usage curve.

This is the working guide to time-shifted Texas plans: what they actually cost, who benefits, and how to model your house before you sign.

The Three Texas Time-Shifted Plan Types

1) Standard Time-of-Use (TOU). Different cents-per-kWh rates by hour. A typical structure: 6 to 8 cents off-peak (10pm to 6am), 12 to 14 cents shoulder (6am to 1pm and 7pm to 10pm), 22 to 35 cents on-peak (1pm to 7pm weekdays). Continuous pricing — every hour has a defined rate.

2) Free Nights. A binary structure: nights (commonly 9pm to 6am or 8pm to 5am) bill at $0/kWh for the energy charge. Daytime hours bill at a premium rate, usually 15 to 22 cents — well above flat-rate market. You still pay TDU delivery charges for nighttime usage (about 4 to 5 cents per kWh through your TDU), so "free" isn't actually free.

3) Free Weekends. Saturday and Sunday energy charges at $0/kWh, weekdays at an elevated rate. Less popular than Free Nights but offered by a few major REPs.

All three are technically TOU plans under the PUCT classification. Power to Choose lets you filter for them under "Plan Type."

Why "Free" Isn't Free

The math on a Free Nights plan looks like this. Suppose your plan offers free energy from 9pm to 6am and charges 18 cents per kWh for energy from 6am to 9pm. The TDU delivery charge is roughly 4.5 cents per kWh, applied 24/7 regardless of when you use power.

A typical Texas household uses about 1,100 kWh per month. Without behavior changes, roughly 30% of usage falls in the "free" window. Let's run two scenarios:

Scenario A: No behavior change. 330 kWh nighttime, 770 kWh daytime.

  • Energy charge: 330 × $0 + 770 × $0.18 = $138.60
  • TDU charge (all kWh): 1,100 × $0.045 = $49.50
  • Base fee (typical): $9.95
  • Total: $198.05 → effective rate of 18.0 cents per kWh

Compare to a flat-rate plan at 12.5 cents per kWh all-in: 1,100 × $0.125 + $9.95 base = $147.45.

The Free Nights plan costs $50 more per month with no behavior change. The "free" label only pays off if you genuinely move load.

Scenario B: Aggressive load-shifting. 600 kWh nighttime (run dishwasher, dryer, pool pump, EV charging overnight), 500 kWh daytime.

  • Energy charge: 600 × $0 + 500 × $0.18 = $90.00
  • TDU charge: 1,100 × $0.045 = $49.50
  • Base fee: $9.95
  • Total: $149.45 → effective rate of 13.6 cents per kWh

Now you're within $2 of the flat-rate plan. Still not winning unless you push further. The breakeven on a typical Free Nights structure is around 65% of usage shifted to the free window. That's achievable with an EV plus a programmable thermostat and timer-controlled appliances. It's not achievable for a family with kids who come home at 4pm.

The Households That Win on Texas TOU Plans

EV owners who charge overnight. A Level 2 charger pulls 7 to 11 kW. Charging 4 hours per night, 5 days a week, adds 700 to 1,100 kWh per month — almost all of it in the free window. The math flips dramatically. Free Nights plans often save EV households $40 to $90 per month vs flat-rate.

Households with battery storage. Charge the battery off-peak (or for free), discharge during peak. The economics of home batteries in Texas without net metering depend heavily on TOU spreads.

Pool owners with variable-speed pumps. A pool pump running 8 hours overnight at 1.5 kW consumes 360 kWh per month, all in the free window. Add it to a Free Nights plan and you've moved 30% of total household usage onto $0 hours.

Solar households without buyback. TOU lets you avoid daytime grid imports (when solar covers your house) and shift nighttime loads to cheap off-peak hours.

The Households That Lose

Work-from-home families. Air conditioning runs 1pm to 7pm on summer weekdays — exactly when peak rates apply. Free Nights makes this worse, not better.

Households with electric heat that runs on cold mornings. Heat pumps and resistance heating during 6am to 9am pull big load right when shoulder/peak rates kick in.

Renters in older Texas homes. Pre-2000 construction with single-pane windows and minimal insulation: the AC runs constantly during summer days, mid-day usage dominates, and there's nothing you can shift.

Anyone without an interval meter. Texas has rolled out smart meters almost universally, but some rural areas still use legacy meters that bill flat. Without 15-minute interval data, TOU plans aren't even available to you.

The Modeling Step That Separates Winners From Losers

Before signing any time-shifted plan, download your historical usage from Smart Meter Texas. You'll get a CSV with 15-minute kWh increments for the last 13 months. Open it in Excel and:

  • Sum the kWh in your candidate plan's "free" or off-peak window for the trailing 12 months.
  • Sum the kWh outside that window.
  • Apply the EFL rates to both buckets, add the TDU charges and base fee.
  • Compare to your flat-rate alternative on the same 12 months of usage.

If the time-shifted plan beats flat-rate by less than 5%, don't bother — the friction of remembering to run laundry at midnight isn't worth small wins. If it beats by 15%+, switch and commit to the load-shifting habits.

REPs that offer Free Nights products will often run this analysis for you if you call. Ask for the modeled annual cost based on your last 12 months of interval data. The good REPs (Reliant, TXU, Constellation) have the tooling. The cheaper REPs may not.

Two Free Nights Mistakes to Avoid

The "I'll shift later" fallacy. People sign Free Nights plans intending to change their schedule, then don't. The plan still bills the premium daytime rate. You're now paying more than flat-rate for the exact same usage. If you can't honestly say you'll cook dinner at 9pm, run laundry at midnight, and pre-cool your house before 1pm — pass.

Forgetting the TDU charge. That 4.5 cents per kWh from your TDU is real money. Nights are free for energy, not for delivery. A truly "free" hour of usage still costs 4.5 cents per kWh once you account for delivery.

What About Standard TOU (Without the "Free" Branding)?

A few Texas REPs (and pilot programs from utilities) offer continuous TOU pricing with no "free" window — just a 4:1 or 5:1 spread between off-peak and on-peak. These products are mathematically cleaner: easier to model, less marketing distortion, and often a better fit for moderate load-shifters. They're underrepresented on Power to Choose because they don't market as flashily. Search for "Time of Use" in the plan name field.

The Bottom Line for Texas Shoppers

Time-shifted plans in Texas work for a clear, narrow set of households. EV ownership is the single biggest swing factor — adding one EV to a Texas household and pairing it with Free Nights can save $500 to $1,200 per year. Without a major shiftable load, "Free Nights" is usually a more expensive way to buy the same electricity.

Model your interval data before signing. The math is unforgiving in either direction.
