A unique ID for your meter
The ESI ID (Electric Service Identifier) is a long number — 17 or 22 digits — that permanently identifies a single point of delivery (your meter) on the Texas grid. It doesn't change when you switch providers.
It maps to your utility & zone
Your ESI ID ties the address to its TDSP (the utility that owns the poles and wires, like Oncor or CenterPoint) and its ERCOT congestion zone — the details every retail provider needs to enroll you.
Deregulated areas only
Competitive ESI IDs exist only where you can choose your retail provider. Municipal and co-op areas (Austin, San Antonio, and others) sit outside that market and have no shoppable ESI ID.
